The George Price Centre for Peace and Development mourns the passing of Ambassador James Murphy who was a good friend to the Rt. Hon. George Price and a Trustee of the Centre.
Ambassador Murphy started out as a Jesuit Priest and Educator, later leaving the priesthood to marry and raise a family. Many Belizeans will remember his exemplary service to Belize as an Ambassador to the United States, a Permanent Representative to the OAS, and High Commissioner to Canada. Surely, he belongs to God and to him he shall return. Belize Suzuki Summer Institute held a free concert for the public in the George Price Centre Auditorium on Friday, July 14th, 2023 at 12:30 in the afternoon to showcase the musical talents of their students at the conclusion of their summer music camp.

From the day we opened our doors in 2004, the George Price Centre for Peace and Development has aimed to reflect the character of Mr. Price, inspiring our visitors to take positive action for a better Belize. We now welcome over 2500 visitors annually. They visit the museum, conduct research, and attend training, summer workshops and cultural events, among others. This year marks the eighth year since we began the annual tradition of inviting a school from one of the districts in Belize to visit the centre. In commemoration of the birthday of the hero to whom the Centre was dedicated, the Rt. Hon. George Price, an invitation was extended to Buena Vista R.C School, Corozal District. On Tuesday 15th January 2019, Thirty (37) students and two (2) teachers arrived at 8:15 am at the George Price Centre in Belmopan. The group began their tour with an introduction to the Staff of the George Price Centre for Peace and Development. Representing the Centre for that day was the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Mick Craig, Mr. Mario Sabido Board Treasurer, Dr. Angel Cal Board Member, Curator/Coordinator Mrs. Saidy Godette, and Mr. Mychal Balderamos. Also volunteering for the day were representatives from Senior Steps Mrs. Cordelia Raymond and Mrs. Lorraine Fraser. Following introductions, the students were into the museum for the tour. There they were made aware of the house rules for the museum and the rest of the facility. In the museum, they asked insightful questions on the life and work of Rt. Hon. George Price. The students were then guided into the auditorium where they were welcomed by Mr. Victor Bejos, one of the earlier residents of Belmopan. Mr. Bejos engaged the students in a lively discussion on the development of Belmopan and his memories of George Price.
At 9:30 am Acting City Administrator Ms. Yolando Chun gave the students of Buena Vista an official welcome to the city of Belmopan. Ms. Chun discussed with the students the role of the City Council in maintaining and developing Belmopan. She also spoke on her memories of Mr. Price. After, the official welcome, the students were given snacks and prepared for the tour of the city of The National 4H Centre and The National Assembly. After leaving The George Price Centre the group was given a short tour of Belmopan. This section of the tour reinforced the discussion they have in the morning with Mr. Bejos and Ms. Chun. The group disembarked at the entrance to the National 4H Centre. At the Centre they were given a tour of the facility, they were allowed to see the animals kept on the grounds of the Centre. They also engaged in a discussion on the importance of agriculture to Belmopan. The students departed the 4H Centre and traveled to The National Assembly where they were shown the Police Station, Post Office, the Office of the Prime Minister and other important buildings in the area. They were then led into the chambers of the National Assembly where the tour guide discussed the structure and importance of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The students thanked their guide and departed the National Assembly. Principal Bobadilla noted that this was the first experience for the students and teachers of touring The National Assembly. Chaperones for the tour were Mrs. Cordelia Raymond and Mr. Mychal Balderamos. The students returned from their tour and were greeted with a Belizean lunch. During lunch, they were given the opportunity to absorb all they had learned from the day’s journey. At 1:00 pm the Quiz Competition commenced. The competition was moderated by Board Member, Dr. Angel Cal. There were six participants who answered questions in the two rounds of the competition. The judges for the event were Mrs. Cordelia Raymond and Mrs. Lorraine Fraser; timekeeper for the competition was Mrs. Saidy Godette. The contestants were articulate and excellent ambassadors for the school. At the end of the competition, the two outstanding spellers were awarded prizes. Following the end of the quiz Dr. Cal imparted knowledge and encouragement to all the students. This was well received by students and teachers. The day ended with gratitude as both the teachers and students of Buena Vista R.C School and the representatives of The George Price Centre gave their thanks. A cake with for the 100th Birthday was presented and the children sang the Happy Birthday song for Mr. Price. Each student and teacher was given a slice as their snack for their trip back to Buena Vista. The Centre would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our generous sponsors, The Holy Redeemer Credit Union who awarded a grant for the transportation of the students, Mr. Yonaho Leslie of The Thatch Caye Resort who gave a monetary donation for the lunch and morning snacks, Toucan Industries who donated the beverages enjoyed by our visitors and all those who gave their time and support. These people and organizations truly exhibited community spirit and service which are important ideas of this Centre. This outreach programme this year exhibited the ideals of the Centre and its founder, of productivity, vision, and service. All parties felt a sense of appreciation of the contributions the Rt. Hon. George Price has done for all Belizeans, the Caribbean, and Central American communities as a whole. |
